Toronto, Canada: GAO Research & Consulting Ltd. today announced that it is releasing GAO VoDSL (Voice over Digital Subscriber Line) software aimed at manufacturers of Voice over DSL gateways and Customer Premise Equipment.

The software would be of tremendous interest to manufacturers of VoDSL gateways and Customer Premise Equipment as it would enable them to provide a low cost software solution based on Digital Signal Processors instead of the more expensive chipset solution.

GAO VoDSL enables compression and packetization of multiple voice signals and includes a data pump which connects to the Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM). It also enables processing of the voice in various formats required for frame relay, ATM and IP standards. The data pump provides rates of up to 768 kbps on a single copper loop.

The voice compression can be based on ITU G.729, G.729A, G.729B, G.723.1, G.722 and G.726.

The software includes a Application Programming Interface (API) so that the vendor can easily establish compatibility with any given gateway.

VoDSL technology allows multiple telephone lines and a continuous high speed internet connection to be delivered to a small office or home using a single copper loop. The bandwidth is allocated dynamically and allows unused data capacity to be used for voice and vice versa.

A typical VoDSL solution consists of the integrated access device or Customer Premise equipment, the DSLAM (Digital subscriber line access multiplexer) and a remote switch center which separates the voice and data traffic. The voice traffic is passed to a class 4 or class 5 switch and the data traffic is sent onto a packet network.

The Voice over DSL gateway functions as aggregator of voice and data traffic and has inputs for telephone (RJ 11) and Ethernet. The access device has codecs and a packetising algorithm for voice compression and transmission. The output port is meant for terminating the external copper loop which is a DSL line.

The VoDSL market has been identified as one of the hottest areas in telecommunications and VoDSL solutions are expected to be deployed rapidly.

The VoDSL software is available in a Beta version and is priced at $90,000 to 190,000 (depending on options) plus royalties.
