Toronto, Canada: GAO Research & Consulting Ltd. has released a fax, data, and voice relay software package (GAO Relay Package). The GAO Relay Package is available in three versions: assembly languages for the ADSP21xx family of DSPs from Analog Devices and the C54x family of DSPs from Texas Instruments, and in fixed-point C for microprocessors.

The GAO Relay Package allows OEMs to create devices that utilize a single digital wireline or wireless voice channel to carry multiple channels of fax, modem, and voice traffic. The Package complies with the ITU standards for

  • Fax: V.21 Channel 2, V.27ter, V.29, V.17, and T.30 for fax relay
  • Data: V.22 / V.22bis, V.32 / V.32bis, and V.34 for data relay

It also includes telephony features such as G.165 Line Echo Canceller, Dual Tone Multi-Frequency Generator/ Decoder, Automatic Gain Control, Caller ID, and Call Progress Detector. Some applications for the GAO Relay Package include fax relay, voice over IP, and voice over frame relay. According to Dr. Frank Gao, CEO of GAO Research & Consulting Ltd., “The GAO Relay Package is designed to provide both corporate users and service providers with an effective means of utilizing digital transmission, whether over wire, satellite, or RF links, to create the most flexible solution for their communications needs.”

For illustrative purposes, the diagram below depicts the unidirectional transmission of a fax relay signal over a single channel. The signal is sent from fax machine 1, demodulated by processor 1, transmitted along a digital link, modulated by processor 2, and received by fax machine 2. The GAO Relay Package performs the demodulation, modulation, and fax relay control functions in this example.
