Toronto, Canada: GAO Research Inc. is pleased to announce that it is working with STMicroelectronics to port its V.90 software modem to ST's new range of powerful and cost effective ST40 products which incorporate the 32-bit SuperH, SH-4 CPU core. This extends the existing cooperation between GAO and ST for supplying GAO's modem software on ST's micros for consumer and telecom applications.

"This cooperation demonstrates that both companies recognize the enormous potential of software based modem solutions on powerful microprocessors" said Uwe Lynen, Vice President of Business Development at GAO.

Since the standardization of the 56Kbps V.90 modem was completed in the fall of 1998, it has quickly become the ubiquitous high-speed modem standard not only for the PC, but for Set-top box applications, Internet appliances, and anywhere high-speed communication is required. The V.90 software solution from GAO provides for more flexible feature sets and excellent cost/performance.

"Software V.90 Modems are a key part of our system-on-chip strategy and with the processing power offered by the SH-4 CPU core this an ideal product to take advantage of GAO's expertise in optimized application software." said Mark Jones, Marketing Director, CPU Cores at ST.
