Toronto, Canada: GAO Research Inc., the preeminent embedded communications software provider, has announced that it will release V.92 compliant modem software as well as V.44 data compression software by the end of Q1, 2001. This places GAO as the market forerunner for softmodem based on the two new standards recently ratified by the ITU.

Dr. Frank Gao, internationally known DSP expert and CEO of GAO Research, says, "We are very pleased that our customers will benefit from the early avaliability of these software packages. We have always maintained that software solutions offer a faster and more cost-effective upgrade path than fixed-function chip sets do. Since an upgrade by GAO's customer from a V.90 to a V.92 softmodem will not require customers to make significant hardware design changes if any, it will prove to be an inexpensive and effective means for customers to provide extended functionality in their products."

GAO is currently porting its C-coded versions of V.92 and V.44 to a wide variety of DSPs and microprocessors. Dr. Gao adds, "These C and assembly-coded new products add significantly to our modem, telephony, and integrated products extending the capabilities of our access technologies for Internet appliances, VoIP, residential gateway and remote access server packages."

V.92 improves on V.90 in three ways:

  • V.92 supplies a higher upstream data rate of up to 48 kbps. This is a significant improvement over V.90 that has a maximum upstream speed of 33.6 kbps.
  • Connection time for V.92 will be up to 50% quicker than V.90
  • V.92 has the ability to temporarily put the 'Modem On Hold' (MOH) allowing users to receive a phone call without having to disconnect from their Internet session.

V.44, the new data compression software, improves on the existing V.42bis standard by as much as 100%. Depending on the kind of data, compression ratios of 6:1 are attainable with V.44. Full advantage of both standards is realized when GAO's V.92 softmodem is combined with its V.44 yielding greater throughput. For example, with a V.92 upstream connection speed of 48 kbps and 6:1 data compression the data transfer rate becomes 288 kbps. Due to physical limitations, hardware modems that depend on the use of serial ports are often limited to a maximum transfer rate of 115.2 kbps.

"Interest in our V.92 software has been high," says Uwe Lynen, GAO's Vice President of Business Development "Many of our current customers are already looking to upgrade their softmodem-based products to include the higher speed modem. We are committed to providing them with V.92's new features quickly, which is extremely important in this competitive market." With the addition of V.92 softmodem and V.44 data compression software to GAO's growing portfolio of modem, fax, speech and telephony software, GAO will continue to be the leader in serving its customers' needs by providing complete, embedded telecommunications solutions.
